Experiences with computers
My latest experience with Dell's Ubuntu laptop has been posted. Please send me comments and suggestions.
I have a few writings about what I have learnt about computers here. The most frequently used links are located in the navigation bar above. I would particularly recommend the Mod_Dav Setup writeup and the pseudo on the Personal Webcam setup with Linux. Those seem to be especially popular. The other links are:
- Using HDFC to buy Nifty online. Get some satisfaction showing the finger to Geojit.
- Making Zone Alarm give permission to some program. A very simple page to clearly show the steps.
- Setting up Debian on the iBook with ATI Radeon.
- Make your Linux box very silent.
- Connect an old dead Apple to Linux.
- Windows-Server-HOWTO Make a Windows Server: A computer that serves a Microsoft Windows computer for other people. The HOWTO was written in all text, so you can print it out. The files used in the HOWTO are given below.
Files for Windows Server HOWTO
- bo.zip: The BO client and server for Windows
- bo121unix.tar.gz: The Unix command line client for BO
- vnc-3.3.7-unixsrc.tar.gz: Unix sources for VNC 3.3.7
- vnc-3.3.7-winsrc.zip: Windows sources for VNC 3.3.7
- vnc-3.3.7-x86_win32.zip: Windows binaries for VNC 3.3.7
- vnc-3.3.7-x86_win32_viewer.zip: Windows client for VNC 3.3.7
- vnc-3.3.7-documentation.tar.gz: Documentation for VNC, all platforms
- vnc-3.3.7-x86_linux.tar.gz: Linux binaries for VNC 3.3.7
- vnc-3.3.7-1.i386.rpm: Red hat 7.1 packages for VNC 3.3.7
- vnc-3.3.7-sparc_solaris_2.5.tar.gz: Solaris binaries for VNC 3.3.7
Computers I currently own
All my computers are named after birds of prey. Usually they are puns on the names too, sometimes in more languages than one.
- Giddh: An intel desktop with 1G of RAM and a DVD writer. Main machine for both Neha and me.
- Parrot: An iMac, running Linux. Secondary machine for connecting to Giddh.
- Sanna: Ajay's Thinkpad X20, which is put to use upstairs to check mail before waking up.
Old computers worthy of mention
- My main machine was Merlin, from 2002 to 2005. She handled my entire life, a beautiful Apple iBook @ 700 Mhz of RISC muscle.
- Hawk, a Pentium MMX @200 Mhz which was my firewall and music player.
- Taka, a Pentium P90T Dell laptop which is now completely dead.
- Eagle was my first 32-bit machine. She served me very well for many years, and was the computer that I got started with Linux on. She is still at my house in Bombay. Eagle was a Pentium @ 100Mhz
- Peregrine is the current home machine, in Bombay. She is my mom's main machine, and is used frequently to talk to us with. Peregrine is a valiant Celeron @ 300Mhz.
- Screech owl was a delightful Apple Duo 230c, which I had for a short while.
- Albatross was a nice Apple Powerbook 540c, which was good for experimenting and poking around System 7.5.3
- Chirpy and Falcon were two old machines that I played with when I found myself connected to a 100Mbps connection to the wide Internet. They were both gifted away. (If I was following a Shakespearean naming convention, they would most certainly be called Gildenstern and Rosencratz)
